The Wakami Village Store is an initiative of COTE that was started in 2014
to develop regional locations to support the business incubation model and
the alliance between COTE and Kiej. This store is a social entrepreneur-
ship model that offers products and services that contribute to the quality
of life of communities where the rural businesses are located, but done in a
sustainable way. The Wakami Village Store becomes a nexus that inspires
the producers of Wakami and their families.
The store promotes quality of life enhancement, nutrition, education, and
income generation. The first store operates in Cantón Luisiana, Patulul,
and Sichitepéquez, and features three components:
The Village Store will provide the community with access to education and self-learning
programs through the internet. The students - children and young people - will have access to
the Internet, and the store will have a facilitator trained to guide clients in the use of
educational programs of interest, such as Duolingo and Khan Academy, etc. In the future we
hope to provide electronic tablets with children’s educational programs for pre-schoolers, and
elementary children. The store will have a monthly schedule of educational, cultural, and
career counseling activities, and other services of interest for the local inhabitants.
Nutrition and Healthy Homes Exhibition
To enhance the communities health and combat endemic malnutrition, the Village Store will
include a component for demonstration space for healthy home products (water filters,
wood-saving stoves, solar kits, organic vegetable gardens, etc.), and provide healthy food for sale as
well as a medical clinic. Personalized nutritional counseling will be provided by measuring
children’s weight and height with subsequent counseling for the mothers. This space will also be
used for dental care and reproductive health campaigns, and other services of interest to the local
population. This same space will also be used for observing early interactions of children from six
months to three years.
Wakami’s Hub and Training Center
The Wakami Store will also include a Wakami Hub and Training Center to warehouse raw material
and finished products. Additionally, it will provide a training area where businesses and producers
can receive technical training for expanding production, strengthening leadership, and other
subjects of interest. It is expected that at least three Wakami enterprises in Pochuta and Patulul
can utilize this Hub to receive raw materials and deliver finished products.
